Geham

Rich in history.

Location

Geham 4352Map is 25 km north of Toowoomba.

The heritage-listed Argyle Homestead is a fine example of colonial architecture visible from the highway. It was built by Duncan Munro in the 1870s.

The Munro brothers established the Argyle Mill on Geham Creek in 1874 to mill the timber cut from the dense forest then flourishing along the escarpment.

The Geham State School was opened in 1871 to educate the children of the timber getters, mill hands, teamsters and later farmers who settled in the area.

An old well and hand operated water pump beside the New England Highway has been restored by the Lions Club of Highfields Northeast Downs.

Name

The name is from an Aboriginal word meaning 'a house on the land' (information from Qld Rail).
